“Allegorical imagery is appropriated imagery; the allegorist does not invent images but confiscates them. They lay claim to the culturally significant poses as its interpreter. And in their hands the images become other (allos = other + agoreuei = to speak) They do not restore an original meaning that may have been lost of obscured: allegory is not hermeneutics.” - Craig Owens
Dodecagon serves as an opportunity to bring our community together and explore its many sides. This exhibition features work by Olympians Yura Adams, Anna Berlin, Nicol Rodriguez Chaves, Cassandra Mayela, Sloan Leo, Keisha Prioleau-Martin, Leeanne Maxey, Lucy Mullican, Naomi Nakazato, Aliza Sternstein, Zi Yi Wang, and Mie Yim. These artists look to iconography or readymade materials as creative wellsprings, challenging primary meanings through reinterpretation.
Driven by distinct interests, Olympians are the heartbeat of our gallery. We are collectively dismantling the cis-male centric art canon, while also pursuing an unorthodox gallery structure. We are protagonists to the tangible forces that make the art world inaccessible. We are anti-boring, pro-crypto, and generous with our creative practices. The twelve artists in this exhibition come together to celebrate Olympians, the core of our mission.
