Chrissy Angliker: PAINT/ING/S

$88.00

Chrissy Angliker’s process balances control and chaos through her dynamic interactions with paint. Her meticulous approach often extends beyond the canvas into her Brooklyn studio and took on new dimensions during a residency in Zurich, Switzerland. This book captures the rhythms of her process and the resulting paintings, with a focus on work created between 2014 and 2016.

In 2015, Olivier Neidhart approached Chrissy with an opportunity to create a book about her art in collaboration with Neidhart & Schön AG in Zurich. The result is a book that speaks through words and, most dominantly, through images about the context in which Chrissy’s paintings come to life. The surroundings, the painting process, and the medium itself are given equal importance to the finished works depicted in the book. Chrissy viewed this project as a rare opportunity to invite people into her world, offering a deeper understanding of what lies beyond her finished paintings.

The book begins with a written introduction in which Chrissy breaks down PAINT/ING/S into her personal relationships with each element: Paint, the process of Painting, and the resulting Paintings.

PAINT/ You learn from that which you do not know.
PAINTING/ The act of painting is an innocent rebellion.
PAINTINGS/ A painting is an object that captures a brush with the muse.

It’s not a claim of knowing. A painting is finished when it feels like I feel.

Following the introduction, the book provides a visual exploration of Chrissy’s studio life, documented by photographers Ebru Yildiz and Michael O’Shea in Brooklyn, as well as Nikkol Rot and Stefan Schaufelberger at her SOLLBRUCHSTELLE residency in Zurich in 2015. Black-and-white photography captures the atmosphere of these spaces, while vibrant color images focus on textural details and finished paintings, drawing the viewer’s attention to color at moments the artist intends. This is not a typical chronological catalog of finished works; instead, it invites the audience to witness a body of paintings in their full context, before they enter the outside world.
