The Salon by NADA x The Community, 2024
Booth 2.17
October 17 - 20, 2024
30 bis Rue de Paradis, Paris France
Olympia is thrilled to present and, and: a solo exhibition of new paintings on raw linen by Colleen Herman for the inaugural edition of The Salon by NADA and The Community. In this new body of work, Herman embraces time’s expansiveness in summer through a conceptual foundation of multiplicities—evoking and anticipating the unpredictable.
Herman’s idiosyncratic abstractions combine high and low painterly materials and techniques, abandoning brushes in favor of direct mark-making with her fingers and hands. She utilizes both oil and spray paint in a gestural, call-and-response process—an improvisational harmony of touch, elastic pauses, and ambient noise.
Created over the recent summer months in the Hudson Valley of Upstate New York, and, and reflects Herman’s engagement with ripened senses: sweaty skin, lots of light, and the relief of water. Vert Noir and Behind the Eyes pulse with hues that emerge from fertile grounds, while Turbulence and Held highlight depth of field through layered monochromatic forms, evoking the infinite spectrum of a summer night’s sky. Herman breaks the stillness of the canvas by seeking impressions rather than answers.
Herman’s fluid body of work suggests impermanence, transformation, growth, and abundance—an emphasis of and, and.
